Caste, Gender, Diaspora: Gaiutra Bahadur and Yashica Dutt in conversation with Anupama Rao
Gaiutra Bahadur and Yashica Dutt in conversation with Anupama Rao
Recorded November 9, 2023 at Barnard College
The transnational resonance of the Black Lives Matter movement has incited communities across the globe to raise their voices against discrimination and inequality and to work across demographics and colonial histories to reflect more broadly on shared affinities and political solidarities. The resonances between caste and race have been an especially important site for rethinking global activism and political praxis: comparative and historical studies of caste societies, that is, societies characterized by durable forms of heritable hierarchy has provoked impassioned debate across the South Asian diaspora.
A recent wave of caste protections has swept across the country with universities like Harvard, Brown, Brandeis, the California State University system adding caste as a protected category under their non-discrimination policies. The Columbia University Senate added caste to its non-discrimination policy on April 28, 2023, arguing that “there was no conversation about caste on university campuses.” Barnard announced the inclusion of caste in its anti-discrimination policy on September 14, 2023. Meanwhile, Seattle became the first city to outlaw caste discrimination details, while SB403 seeks to put California on the map as the first state to recognize the ongoing harms of caste.
In 2023, Barnard’s Helen Pond McIntyre ’48 Lecture draws on the rich legacy of connected histories and diasporic activism to honor scholarship on caste in diaspora with special focus on the relationship of sexual reproduction and social distinction in making global caste. How might the experience of indenture and migration reshape our understanding of the complex relationality of caste and race? How does caste continue to frame social relations of intimacy and exclusion? What are the perils and potentials of anticaste organizing in the diaspora? These are just a few questions that animate our effort to address emergent perspectives for complicating our approach to the study of caste in diaspora.

Queer Theory rests on the assumption that everyone is actually Queer and that we've all been conditioned to believe that heterosexuality is normative. These weirdos actually believe their jobs are to free all of us from the oppressive idea that heterosexuality is the norm. It's pathetic. That's why they're pushing all of this so hard now.

"How we receive asks of support" is worded in a way that is presumptuous, to assume that when you ask for something you will surely receive it when that is NOT always the case, or almost NEVER the case in the lives of many. You first need to know who to ask and how to ask and when to ask & what to ask. You need to take SO many things into consideration that are not EVER taught & if you do not have the neurological capacity to be able to do that, then you're screwed. Even if you ask in the correct way to the correct person at the correct time there's still a VERY good chance that they'll say no to you. When you run out of energy to ask you just fall through the cracks. This has been the entire Godforsaken framework of my life and I am 43. Living in when I call a toxicly or destructively independant society, When you're forced to be independent after having no other choice all your life, yet not actually having the skills to do it successfully alone without enduring intense damage. The message you receive is that you will never have any of your needs that you don't mattern& that you are not worthy of care or love. When no one will help you, when you're told to just keep doing things by yourself, when people keep saying no to you it actually causes a VERY signifant amount of additional damage.

The advocation of fringe groups is only to break solidarity of the majoritarian group. You’re fringe interests arnt ever going to lead to anything that resembles justice or socialism it is merely a tool of minoritsrian banker interests

No neoliberalism in no way supports conservative morality at all. Neoliberalism is cosmopolitan and it also supports the morality of the cosmopolitan city which is all the lgbt women’s liberation and minority identity because it is itself a minority dominated thinking. The Christian association with Republican Party is not a logical or rational addition it is merely that they have no where to go. What Christian interests do republicans neoliberals give them? Nothing. Neoliberalism enforces left wing social policy (farther left than Trotsky) while being libertarian in economics. Morality is the morality of the banker and the merchants which isn’t morality at all.

I am confused; why would someone see an attack and not call the police? This is the same logic used that allowed predators like R. Kelly, Harvey Weinstein, and Sean Combs to continue to harm those with less power/influence/money, etc. If I see an attack, I am calling police. I really do not understand the message here. Please elaborate.

Wait a minute, aren't doctors working in a health project at the top of a legitimate heirarchy??? You know, the people with the knowledge and skills needed to actually provide a service people need? At least in that project at that time they are legitimate "leaders".

Hmmm, what's the difference between a church group distributing food and encouraging recipients to read the bible or attend church services, and a mutual aid group distributing food and encouraging recipients to attend mutual aid group meetings?

poor people have been knowing forever that theres far more solidarity across identity marker lines in poor places than anywhere else, self awareness is key but identity markers are pretty shallow if youre thinkin straight. i mean who wants representation in a money laundering operation for the wealthy? well meaning workers and directors aside theres no space for creativity there

really appreciate this lecture dean thank you. i f with your style and the way you compiled the info from sources and talked about those sources and then ppl in the chat were just mad that it was you talking about it and like really defensive instead of taking in the info which you made clear was anticapitalist thoughts from all over the spectrum of people the commenters were worried werent being centered lol. idk people maybe watch that one back, pretty cohesive argument for real liberation coming from the masses of dispossessed people because they care about eachother not about having a career in capitulation. i’m a poor white person who has worked in restaurants for 15 years not college educated, and i have made it work for me I essentially set down plates in front of rich people at nice places now, or bartend in busy places and have enough to get by, not much more, but i work less hours now than i have for that money. its given me a lot more time to do mutual aid and have cash to give away in my pocket every day. everyone i work with is on the same page at work, we hate work. but i dont have to pretend i like it and that is liberating for me personally. i care about the people i have connections with that trancesnds the financial, i hang out with poor senior citizens and drug users and we solve little conundrums for eachother and help eachother figure out life. honestly the emotional and intellectual connections i have outside of any formal movement brings me the most joy and gratefulness i hope that my comerades feel the same. anyway thanks for this i have friends in not profits who have tried to ‘put me on’ and i even taught a bartending class at one of them and even that short experience was really wild and i saw a lot of what youre shining a light on. it wasnt feeling very free or freaky in there, really depressed staff who had to fake like they cared, swooped in at the end and made my students take this long ass survey for a funding thing to get their certificate. cracks me up that people can listen to that extremely compelling historical material analysis and get to the end and be like But how am i supposed to sustain myselF without PaymEnT? i mean… gonna have to give up some creature comforts and descend the class ladder

Zora Neale hurston...like some light skinned blacks..I've recognized that they have white blood in them they're going to think like white people along with DNA. And white people know this. Not all light skinned black have white and black thought processes. Some have brilliant dedicated strong black senses. Nobody ever want to talk about this because it's TRUE. You'll also notice that only when a black advantage point will help black Americans, that's when a light skinned black will jump on the band wagon. Otherwise you'll see them sticking with white people when they want something to benefit them.

@@christophermay859 this isn’t directed at you but for anybody who reads this and also doesnt understand. There are tens of thousands of newly and previously disabled people in Palestine, making this a disabled justice issue. Genocide is disabling, just as racism and all other oppressions are. All the folks who have had amputations without anesthesia, lost loved ones, witnessed the most unimaginable violence constantly and all around them, are breathing in toxic chemicals from white phosphorous and bombs, drinking unclean water, can’t get access to any medical services (medicine, therapy, food, clothes, shelter) for pre-existing conditions, are being starved, etc. they are disabled. I just saw a video of a young boy with a cochlear implant who JUST found the batteries he needs to power his device, after not been able to hear for over 4 months. Whatever your “opinion” is, that doesn’t change that disabled people everywhere are the most vulnerable always. Free palestine. I hope Barnard does better.
